On the vast plains of Colombia, a modern steel-structured industrial plant rises from the ground—the Production Plant No. 2 project. As a significant achievement for Chinese steel structure companies expanding into the South American market, this project has won high praise from the client for its superior engineering quality, rigorous technical standards, and efficient construction management, setting a new benchmark for Sino-Colombian infrastructure cooperation.
Scale and Design
The Production Plant No. 2 covers a total area of 35,605.51 square meters, with a building area of 24,236.84 square meters, of which the industrial plant area reaches 19,701.03 square meters, and the building height is 16.3 meters. The project is designed according to Colombian seismic fortification requirements of intensity 6, with a structural safety level of II and a design service life of 50 years, fully meeting the long-term needs of industrial production.
In terms of foundation design, the project adopts a prestressed concrete solid square pile + independent pile cap and connecting beam structure, providing stable support for the superstructure steel structure. The main structure adopts a portal steel frame system, combined with a color-coated steel sheet enclosure, ensuring both the overall stability of the factory building and achieving rapid construction.
Materials Selected with High Standards
The project has strict requirements for the quality grade of steel: Q355-B material is used for major load-bearing components such as beams, columns, and purlins to ensure load-bearing capacity; Q235-B material is used for secondary components such as supports and tie rods to optimize costs while meeting functional requirements. All steel materials meet international standards, ensuring project quality from the source.
The selection of welding materials is equally rigorous: E50xx and E43xx type welding rods are used for manual welding; YJ501-1 and ER50-6 welding wires are used for automatic and semi-automatic welding; and ∅4.0 H08MnA+SJ101 flux is used for submerged arc welding. Specialized materials are matched to different welding processes to ensure weld quality and connection strength.
Dual Protection Against Corrosion and Fire
Located in the tropical region of South America, the high temperature and humidity environment places higher demands on the corrosion protection of the steel structure. The project strictly controlled rust removal standards: major components achieved a rust removal grade ≥ Sa2.5, reaching near-white level; minor components achieved a rust removal grade ≥ St2, ensuring coating adhesion. The coating process employed a dual protection system of anti-corrosion and fire-retardant coatings, resisting environmental corrosion while meeting fire safety requirements, providing reliable assurance for the long-term safe operation of the plant.
Technology Export and Local Integration
The successful implementation of this project not only represents another successful export of Chinese steel structure technology to South America but also a deep integration of Chinese standards with local Colombian practices. From design specifications to construction techniques, from material selection to quality control, the entire Chinese solution took root locally, while fully respecting and adapting to Colombian building regulations and natural conditions.
The completion of the No. 2 production plant project provides a high-standard spatial carrier for local industrial production in Colombia, strongly supporting the development of regional manufacturing. It stands as a monument, witnessing the solid steps of Chinese steel structure enterprises going global and writing a new chapter in Sino-Colombian infrastructure cooperation.
